The Story

In precolonial times it was believed that Tala, goddess of the evening star, would send little balls of light to guide her people in the dark. However when the Spaniards came they demonized many of our ancient beliefs. What was once a guiding light sent by a benevolent goddess soon turned into the santelmo, vengeful spirits who would lure those lost to their deaths.

But perhaps instead of looking at this story in one way we could consider it a reflection of the duality of nature. We can't have light without darkness, life without death.

The Tala Earrings feature a reverse colorway of the Tala Necklace, with the starburst rendered in abalone against the white mother-of-pearl, symbolizing the duality of nature. May it inspire you to reflect on your own duality – the duality of human nature – both the light and the dark. Instead of letting it holding us back, let it instead help us find balance in life.

Details

Materials: Paua abalone and mother-of-pearl inlay, 24 kt gold-plated brass, stainless steel posts and backs. Stainless steel makes these safe for sensitive ears.

Measurements: Earring drops 3.5 cm and weighs a very light 7.5 g each.

Each of our pieces is completely handcrafted with natural seashells, so any variation in size, color, or pattern is completely natural, making each piece unique.

Due to the intricacies involved in the crafting of our jewelry, each design is only available in a limited number of pieces.
